Alabama
Alabama’s immigration law was the focus of a recent episode of “This American Life.” For the segment, Jack Hitt traveled to Alabama shortly after HB 56 went into effect to see how the draconian law, which has been compared to the Fugitive Slave Act, had quickly created a culture of fear and shame.

My partner and I have a common law marriage in Alabama(where they are recognized as being legally married). We are going into a custody battle and need to know if that will hold up in court as being legally married or if we need to go to the Courthouse and get married that way. Will do that if necessary but would rather not(having wedding later this year) if the answer to my Q is yes. Thank you. They are my partners kids and they are in the temporary custody of the girl’s parents. So we are going against the Grandparents.Want to make sure when we go to court and say we are married that it will hold up. just trying to be prepared.
Not what I asked for. I know about the “best interest” standard. Was just asking if common law held up in court and stated why I was going.
